The Levels of Anxiety and Depression in Patients According to the Stages of Bone Marrow Transplantation

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the changes of anxiety and depression related with patients at the various stages of bone marrow transplantation. It would be provide with imformations about the adequate psycho-emotional support. The subjects
were
twenty-three adult patients undergone bone marrow transplatation from October 1992 to July 1993, at St. Mary'Hospital, Catholic University Medical College, and the control groups consisted of sixteen leukemic patients treated with chemotherapy
alone.
Spielberger's State-Train Anxiety Inventory and Beck's Depression Inventory were used for assessing their anxiety and depression levels.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. The level of trant anxiety of patients of bone marrow transplantation was significantly higher than that of the control(P<.05).
2. The level of state anxiety in all stage of the patients with bone marrow transplantation was significantly higher than that of control(P<05). Further more the level of state anxity at stage 5 (stage of discharge) was the highest among
patients
in
all stages(P<.05).
3. The level of depression of patients with bone marrow transplantation was significantly lower than of the control(P<.05). The rates of the patients with bone marrow transplantation who revealed moderate or severe depression were variable from
8.7% to
30.4% in accordance with each stage, while those of the control were 81.2%. The level of depression was the highest at stage 3, instage of bone marrow infusion(P<.05).
These data suggested that supportive nursing care, would diminish the anxiety level during the whole process of bone marrow transplantation and also decrease the level of depression at the stage of bone marrow infusion, it would be necessary for
the
patients with bone marrow transplantation.
